Group outing to the Old Croydon Airport March 2026

An excellent informative tour around the preserved building including reception hall, and the control tower. It’s well worth multiple visits to appreciate the historical value.

Croydon Airport was the pre-war and immediate postwar airport for London used by celebrities and those that could afford air travel. The runways were grass fields and the aeroplanes propeller driven, limited by weight, which was spread evenly across the passenger and luggage areas. It was a significant attraction to view the celebrities of the day upon their arrival. As an example of flights, it took 8 days to fly to India with 7 stop overs on route, with each stop needing a carpenter to repair any damage.

Replacement came with mass passenger flights caused by the larger propellor and jet passenger aircraft requiring concrete runways being developed at Heathrow not possible at Croydon.

Waiting for their luggage!
