Mercedes World Visit on 18th July

The museum was for Mercedes cars only dating back to 1870’s, when tyres & suspension were noticeably absent and braking systems not far behind, either! Moving into the early 1900’s things had improved significantly and a superb monstrous black & white sedan with white wall tyres (think Bonnie & Clyde, here!) in immaculate condition attracted attention. It’s value is incalculable!!

Moving through the years to the 50’s & 60’s, there were concept cars (looking remarkably like Lotus?) and the famous gull-wing door model. Many models, right up to the present day were on display, including EV’s and in case you had brought your cheque book with you, there was an office there that could take any orders or arrange test drives.

Not so with the F1 cars, again from the days of when Brooklands staged motor racing right up to the present day. Incidentally part of the Brooklands circuit runs adjacent to the full Mercedes outdoor test track on which you spend from £50 up to £1000 pounds for the opportunity of being driven (or actually driving) current models around the test track and skid control area…could work out to be an expensive day out! Formula E race cars were also on show.

For me, the best display was every single part of the current F1 car, suspended from the ceiling by very fine steel wires but spread out across a 10 metre diameter; like looking at a 3D Haynes Manual; incredible!
